Human rights The concept of human rights is a collective term for the rights included in the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted in 1948 at the UN’s General Assembly, in the UN’s two Conventions from 1966 on Civil and Political Rights and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and in the Council of Europe’s Convention – The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) – for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, signed in Rome in 1950 together with Protocols. The ECHR was implemented in Danish law in 1992, and the European Court of Human Rights ensures that Denmark complies with the provisions of the Convention. Human rights include, inter alia, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, freedom of association, protection against ethnical discrimination and protection of privacy. For details about human rights, see the Danish Institute for Human Rights, www.menneskeret.dk.
